Dear St. Martin of Tours Family,

This Tuesday, the United States will have an election. One side will “win” and another will “lose.” The human (natural) response will result further division amongst us. However, the super-human (supernatural) will be to embrace and to love. Our Lord commands us:

“Bless those who curse you, pray for everyone who is cruel to you” (Luke 6:28).

Gloating, harboring anger, or cursing the enemy do nothing more than call down God’s anger upon yourself. Like shooting fiery arrows into the wind they will return to you. A curse against another will return to you. Yet a blessing toward another will return you.

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:6-7).

Not only are we fulfilling the command to love when we bless rather than curse, we also build a wall of protection for ourselves:

“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness, and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked” (Ephesians 6:14-17).

Impart a blessing and it forms a wall that defends you from evil. It blocks any curse.

Impart a blessing on such a person and a spiritual shield of protection forms around you. Demons may try but can’t touch you. Like a shield of tempered glass, you can see the attack; you can witness scare tactics; but “no evil shall touch you” (Psalm 91:10).

Don’t put others in a negative light! When you want to speak badly of those who oppose you, you oppose yourself. When you speak positively, it will release you from your ill feelings — free you from shackles you put on yourself.

Let God fight your battles, and pray in the words of Our Savior the night before his Crucifixion:

“I am not asking on behalf of them alone, but also on behalf of those who will believe in Me through their message, that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me” (John 17:20-21).
